Grateful Dead - 30 Dark Star performances from 1972 mixed into a single recording!
Length: 11hrs 42min
My goal was to merge all Dark Star performances from 1972 as if it was one very long performance with a marathon jam in the middle. For many Grateful Dead fans, experiencing a near 12hr jam like this would be a dream come true.
I dropped all Dark Star recordings from 1972 into Sony ACID 7 (you can use Ableton, Reaper, or any 'DAW'), and organized them by date.
I then locate and remove all vocal sections except the first 1st verse and the last 2nd verse vocal section.
Then with all remaining jam parts, I cross faded each into a continual mix. In some cases, several minutes were cut to a part that would cross fade well.
This isn't a remix, I kept the same order and progression and only applied cross fades between sections.
The band rarely sang the 2nd verse in 1972, and the last performance of the year did not include a 2nd verse. In order to close out the recording as I planned, I used the last 2nd verse at the end, which is from 7/26/1972.
I left one Dark Star out, which is from 10/23/1972. The quality of the recording is very poor. If anyone can find a good recording of this Dark Star, please let me know, and I'll update the mix.
Version 2: This is V2 of the 1972 Dark Star mix. It has the following benefits over the V1 mix:
better mixing - I reviewed every cross fade and adjusted many
correct order - a listener pointed out that the V1 had some out of order
added missing Dark Stars - added 4 of the 5, one was very poor in quality and not included

Thanks for the inspiration.
I only make Dead mixes because of this.

Thank you SWP!
Your '72 Dark Star quilt is now even more of a trip to follow into the nightfall! And all the '73 Dark Stars are lined up and just about ready? THANK YOU

Updated - Now With Timestamps
Greetings All - I'm glad you are enjoying the Dark Star 1972 mix. As requested by many, I have now updated the description with a playlist showing the timestamp of each Dark Star in the mix. I also saw some questions in the reviews and have updated the description to answer those questions.
Other news - I have a 1973 Dark Star mix done. I just need to give it some listens to make sure the transitions are smooth before I release it.

Hi. If you have time, Can you please let me know what software you used to do this? I used to do jobs like this with Easy CD Creator, but they no longer have the features. I have searched for a new application but have come up short. As you well know, one needs to be able to edit a a track into sub-tracks, as well as crossfade and rejoin back together into longer tracks. Any help is appreciated.
One question on the mix itself - do you remove the atonal cacophony sections that are part of a lot of the 1972 Dark Stars?. Thanks

through the transitive nightfall of diamonds indeed...
Thank you. A truly remarkable and successful endeavor, it really does sound like one 12 hour long dark star... unlike other 'jam' compilations I have heard, that just when you recognize and get into one jam, it jumps to another...this one is seamless, I applaud your commitment and deadication.... cheers...

to finish my thought...
...i really appreciate how much better any passage is
when everyone: Jerry, Phil, Bobby, Keith, & Billy; are
clear & reasonably even in the mix. The interplay is really
what the Dead were all about. Hard to pull my head out

You just forced me to include an acid trip in my schedule for next week and I'm busy as hell!!!
But thank you so much for this. It's like Greyfolded only a trazillion times better. 72 DS's are as good as it ever gets.

It's just what I expected, although the 4th May second verse was also good.
